A brief history…
The idea of the clasico cc was scribbled on a beer mat by 2 friends in the closing months of 2011, when they both realised their current cycling clubs weren’t offering what they were looking for.
Unable to find clubs that matched their interests and needs, the clasico was born, and with no better idea for a name, they used their respective business names and put some money up to help form Stay Classy / Well Handled RT. Initially, the club was formed as a racing team, with it’s 5 riders entering local time trials.
A year later, what was only meant to be a year long experiment was confirmed for another year, and with many people from all over the country admiring the kit, the club started picking up interest from riders currently unattached to cycling clubs. The emphasis was shifted from a racing team to a cycling club, the kit was slightly redesigned, and a handful of new members from both north and south of the Tyne joined.
After an interesting year that saw the club moving in several different directions, the club’s two founders parted company and for 2014 onwards, the club changed it’s name to clasico cc (the Spanish for “classic”), and redesigned the kit without sponsor logos (so that the kit could last for several years). The kit has proved popular, with even non-members buying up jerseys!
For 2014, the club’s main intention is to raise it’s profile both locally and, as much as possible, further afield.
Joining is easy. Just choose from one of the following options:

Clasico cc is a CTT affiliated club, and as such some of our members time trial. If you would like to take part in a time trial, there are various options available to you. During race season (late spring to early autumn) there are “club” time trial races every Tuesday, Wednesday and alternate Thursday. Riders are set off at 1 minute intervals to see how fast they can complete 10 miles.
The Derwentside 10 is the hardest of the 3 local time trials. By far the most popular, the Barnesbury 10 course (M102B) starts on the A1068 to the Plessey Checks roundabout and then does 2 loops of the dual carriageway to the 3 Horseshoes roundabout and back. This is the fastest course in the North East and on a good night some low 20/21 minute times are recorded. Headquarters is Nelson way at the Junction with Colbourne Avenue. The Tyneside Vagabonds time trials are run fortnightly, and alternate between a 10 mile TT and a 25 mile TT that makes up it’s members only BAR (best average rider).
